Yesterday and today there have been huge demonstrations (100,000+ people) in front of the Parliament building on Rustaveli Avenue. The crowds are demanding new parliamentary elections and are protesting actions of the current Saakashvili government.
I won't get into politics here, but these demonstrations are having an effect on us. The boys came home from school early in the day yesterday because so few students were there. Many stores are closed today because people are going to the demonstrations. We've decided that we simply should stay at home, since who knows what will happen. Most of the news is on TV, so we know what is going on, and it's all quite interesting. Meanwhile I will post some miscellaneous photos that you might enjoy.
Tanya's lovely old carpet was cleaned and brought to the new place, but the ends and fringe were badly damaged. We were fortunate enough to find a shade of wool that matched perfectly. I enjoyed the work and if you don't look too closely, I think you can't see the repair. |
Tbilisi is a city of fountains. Here are a few of my favorites: |
Tbilisi is also a city of amazing and varied architecture. Here is MacDonald's--can you see the Golden Arches? |

Former Mines Construction building, now an office building. |
This amazing structure, built in the 80's with anti-earthquake techniques in place, seems to me the culmination of the Soviet "concrete-box" style of architecture. |
This building on Freedom Square is now the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel. |
A view of the old buildings with their traditional balconies overlooking the Mtkvari River.
