Ellsworth Middle School consists of grades six, seven, and eight and has an enrollment of 269 students. There are four or five homerooms per grade, with class size ranging from 19 to 22 students. In addition to the thirteen homeroom teachers, there are another fourteen full-time or part-time professional employees working with the students. A strong support staff also helps to make E.M.S. a positive educational setting.
Students of all abilities are grouped together in each homeroom. The homeroom travels together throughout the nine period day to each teacher. The one exception to this is in grade 8 math which is ability grouped. Each teacher specializes in two or three subjects but also works with grade level team members to create integrated units that connect subjects together. Additionally, the Unified Arts faculty offers phys. ed., art, music, band, and chorus to our students. The Spectrum program works with students at an accelerated pace, and our special education program works with students who need extra assistance.
This year, EMS is pleased to offer students and parents online access to daily assignments and grades through the ClassRoll.com program. This will certainly help communication between home and school. Also implemented for the first time is the Read 180 program which will provide targeted instruction for up to 60 students who need some additional reading help. Academic help is also provided in our after school program which also serves as a supervised study area for students who need to stay late for practices.
The school day does not end at 2:30 PM for many students. After school activities include jazz band, show choir, chess, yearbook, and drama. Athletics include cross country, soccer, basketball, cheering, wrestling, track, baseball, and softball. Participation levels are high because two or three teams are offered in each sport.
With a friendly and hard working staff, and clear expectations for academics and behavior, the Ellsworth Middle School is a welcoming place for everyone. We very much look forward to working with both students and parents this year. Let’s make it a great one!
